Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib has reintroduced a congressional resolution
recognizing the Palestinian Nakba, the mass displacement of Palestinians
during the creation of Israel in 1948, while linking that history to the
ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories.
The resolution, H.Res. 1289, calls for recognition of Palestinian refugee
rights and renewed support for humanitarian aid programs serving displaced
Palestinians across the Middle East.
The measure comes as Palestinians worldwide mark the 78th anniversary of the
Nakba amid continuing devastation in Gaza and growing international criticism
of Israeli military actions. Tlaib and supporters argue that understanding the
Nakba is essential to understanding the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict
and the ongoing displacement faced by millions of Palestinians today.
Progressive lawmakers, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna
Pressley, and Betty McCollum, joined as co-sponsors.
Supporters describe the resolution as an effort to acknowledge a historical
injustice that continues to shape Palestinian life, while critics argue it
unfairly targets Israel and deepens political divisions surrounding the
conflict. The reintroduction of the measure reflects the growing visibility of
Palestinian rights issues inside Congress as debate intensifies over U.S.
policy toward Israel and Gaza.
