U.S. VETOES PALESTINIAN

U.N. SECURITY COUNCIL MEMBERSHIP REQUEST


On April 18, 2024, the United States vetoed A Palestinian request to the United Nations Security Council for full UN membership. Twelve of the 15-member security council voted in favor, with abstentions from the UK and Switzerland, leaving the United States the only one in direct opposition.

Robert Wood, Deputy US Ambassador to the United Nations, told the council, “The United States continues to strongly support a two-state solution. This vote does not reflect opposition to Palestinian statehood, but instead is an acknowledgment that it will only come from direct negotiations between the parties.”

China, Slovenia, Sierra Leone, Russia, South Korea, Mozambique, Malta, Japan, Guyana, France, Ecuador and Algeria

Votes Against:
United States

Abstanes:
U.K. and Switzerland
