On June 13, 2024, the House of Representatives voted on Republican
Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida's proposed amendment to H.R.8070 -
Servicemember Quality of Life Improvement and National Defense Authorization Act
for Fiscal Year 2025 that aimed to prohibit the sale or transfer of cluster
munitions or munitions technology. The amendment did not pass, as 286 voted
against it, with only 134 votes, evenly split between Democrat and Republican
representatives, in favor. This vote reflects continued support for supplying
these weapons, even as U.S. officials condemn similar actions by other nations,
such as Russia.
Cluster munitions are capable of causing widespread harm, especially to
children. These munitions are considered so dangerous that 124 countries have
already signed a treaty banning their use—the U.S. Congress, however, seems to
have no issues in supplying Israel with these munitions despite their
devastating effects on civilians, perpetuating military conflicts instead of
prioritizing human rights and humanitarian principles.
