FIGHTING RACISM ON THE INTERNET

THE PRIORITY SHOULD BE EDUCATION

NOT CENSORSHIP

Today, there is a move across the internet to increase censorship. We are not against all censorship. But capitulating to demands for censorship can be a dangerous game.

Who gets to decide what is true and not true? What ideas are safe or not safe?

We understand and support the need to fighting racist hate. However, the focus should not be on censorship. The focus should be spreading a positive campaign to defend a multicultural society. The focus should be better education.

At Earth Future Action, we are dedicated to fighting racism and bigotry. We have made many grants in the cause of creating a nonviolent multicultural world.

In America we have been cited for our work in fighting for the civil rights of Muslim Americans.

The solution to fighting racism and hate is not a mass campaign of censorship. To be specific, we do not believe that you “save” democracy by destroying the freedom of speech.

The United States defeated the Soviet Union because we had freedom of speech and they did not.

Deleting history in order to fight hate is a road to disaster.

In 2002, the established wisdom was that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Should all posts against that have been deleted?

Communism killed over 100 million people.  Should all Marxist sites be banned?

We believe that the freedom of speech protected by the Bill of Rights and Article 18 of the Human Rights Declaration. These documents should be a focus of protecting free speech on the internet. And as far as bad ideas go, it is best for policy makers to step aside and let the people decide what is a good or bad idea.

Instead of censoring the internet, policy makers need to focus on protecting the freedom of speech, while adopting positive programs to promote the idea of a tolerant world that respects our planet’s diverse population groups and religions.
