MAJOR MILITARY AID BILLS ANNOUNCED
Note: We are currently studying these bills and will reserve comments for when we finish reading.
House Speaker Mike Johnson announced four bills on April 15, 2024: separate
bills to advance military aid to Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan, plus a fourth
piece of miscellaneous legislation combining many other priorities. Johnson has
indicated that these national security bills' aid funding levels will be around
the same as those proposed in the Senate supplemental aid package, intending to
move border security measures from that package to future bills. In the
afternoon of Wednesday, April 17, 2024, Johnson presented the three aid bills,
and the fourth, titled the "21st Century Peace Through Strength Act," was
released later that evening. Johnson intends to allow members to read the
legislation for 72 hours before bringing the bills to the floor, with House
plans to vote on the bills on Saturday.
