On November 4, 2025, Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old state
assemblyman from Queens, was elected as the 111th mayor of New York City,
becoming both the city's first Muslim mayor and its youngest in over a
century.
Running as a Democrat with strong progressive credentials, Mamdani defeated
former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, securing just over
50% of the vote — roughly 50.4% compared to Cuomo's 41.6%.
Mamdani's platform centred on affordability and structural reform: proposals
included rent freezes, a $30 minimum wage by 2030, free public transit for
city buses, universal childcare, and higher taxes on the wealthy — all aimed
at reshaping the city's social and economic landscape.
His campaign was built on grassroots momentum: small-dollar donations,
strong social media engagement, and broad volunteer support helped him
overcome entrenched interests and a high-profile opponent in Cuomo.
With this win, observers say Mamdani's election marks a turning point in New
York politics, reflecting both demographic change and a rising appetite
among younger, more diverse voters for bold citywide reform.
He will officially take office on January 1, 2026.
