ISRAEL'S USE OF TORTURE

In early August 2024, the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem released a devastating report titled “Welcome to Hell: The Israeli Prison System as a Network of Torture Camps”. The report, based on testimonies from 55 Palestinians—mainly from the West Bank, Gaza, and several Israeli citizens—details experiences in Israeli prisons since October 7, 2023, with almost all detainees never formally charged. According to the findings, more than a dozen Israeli prison and detention facilities, both military and civilian, were converted into de facto torture camps—places deliberately designed to inflict relentless physical and psychological harm. Consistent testimonies describe physical and sexual violence, including beatings, use of dogs, tasers, and brass knuckles; humiliation through forced nudity, strip searches, and degrading acts; deliberate starvation and provision of rotten food; sleep deprivation, constant bright lighting, or harsh noise; and denial of religious worship, personal belongings, legal access, or medical care. One witness recalled arriving at Megiddo Prison and hearing a soldier say, “Welcome to hell.”

The report also documents that at least 60 Palestinian prisoners have died in Israeli custody since October—48 from Gaza and 12 from the West Bank or Israel—with many deaths potentially linked to abuse or denied medical care. B’Tselem attributes these abuses to policy decisions taken under Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir, supported by Prime Minister Netanyahu and the prison administration. The group urges the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate, arguing that Israel’s justice system is compromised and incapable of impartial action.

This report matters because it provides first-hand accounts from survivors, documenting systemic and intentional cruelty, and highlights severe breaches of international humanitarian law, potentially amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity. It challenges claims that such abuse is the work of a few rogue individuals, instead presenting it as part of a coordinated, government-backed system of oppression.
