A coalition of more than 200 progressive advocacy organizations and think tanks released a joint statement Wednesday arguing that $6 trillion in spending "should be the floor, not the ceiling" of Democratic lawmakers' ambitions as they craft a legislative package aimed at combating the climate crisis, rebuilding the nation's infrastructure, and repairing the tattered safety net.

STATEMENT: 80+ Think Tanks And Organizations To Biden and Congress: Build Back Better Must Match Magnitude of Moment (Progressive Caucus Action Fund)

The Institute for Policy Studies, the Economic Policy Institute, and the Progressive Change Action Fund issued a statement last week calling the Biden proposals “necessary but insufficient in scale and scope.”

These progressive organizations said Biden’s economic plan “must be scaled up,” noting that it “falls short of the $7 trillion President Biden proposed on the campaign trail and well short of the at least $10 trillion over 10 years (3 percent of GDP annually) suggested by many advocates and experts to meet the extent of our country’s needs.”

The statement also urged the administration to go big in his American Families Plan to include “much-needed provisions on paid leave, child care, housing, drug pricing, Medicare expansion, higher education, immigration, unemployment insurance, poverty-reducing tax credits, and taxes on the wealthy — changes that would lead to greater economic security and opportunity for everyone.”

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and other lawmakers on Sunday sent a letter to President Joe Biden asking for an expansion of Medicare benefits to be included in the upcoming American Families Plan, a roughly $1.8 trillion spending and tax plan aimed at rebuilding the U.S. economy.

About 140 progressive groups on Thursday released a joint statement calling on the Biden administration to condemn the Israeli government over a host of policies they say amount to war crimes against Palestinians. The statement was signed by prominent progressive groups like MoveOn, Justice Democrats and the Sunrise Movement, to name a few.

"We, the undersigned organizations that represent millions of people across the United States, are deeply concerned about the growing Cold War mentality driving the U.S. approach to China. Although our organizations may have different mandates or ideological persuasions, we know that the new Cold War with China currently being pushed in Washington does not serve the millions of people demanding change across this country nor the billions of people affected by U.S. foreign policy abroad, and will instead lead to further insecurity and division."

Progressives push for key national security positions under Biden (The Hill, 12-18-20)

Dozens of progressive organizations will deliver a book to President-elect Joe Biden’s transition team on Friday with staffing recommendations for 100 positions in his administration within the national security space.
